Planning your dream vacation to Mexico? Whether you're flying into Cancun, Cozumel, or Tulum, a little preparation goes a long way in making your trip smooth, fun, and totally stress-free.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through exactly how to prepare for your Mexico vacation—what to pack, what NOT to bring, what to expect at the airport, and how to avoid common travel mistakes. Because yes, Mexico is fabulous—but even paradise has rules.
What You Can’t Bring to Mexico: Items to Leave at Home
Wondering what not to pack for Mexico? Here’s the short list of prohibited items you’ll want to leave behind to avoid customs delays or worse:
E-cigarettes, vapes, and vape liquid
CBD oil, cannabis products, or anything hemp-related
Medications containing pseudoephedrine (like Sudafed) or codeine
Illegal drugs of any kind
Firearms, ammunition, or weapon-related items
More than 10 packs of cigarettes (must be 18+)
More than one laptop
Mexico’s customs laws are different from those in the U.S., and violating them—even accidentally—can lead to serious trouble. For a full list of restricted items, check the official Mexico customs site before you travel.
Travel Documents You Need to Enter Mexico
Let’s talk paperwork. Here’s what you need to bring for a smooth entry into Mexico:
Passport book (not a passport card if flying in)
No visa required for U.S. travelers staying less than 180 days
Up-to-date vaccinations—including MMR, especially due to the rise in measles cases worldwide

Don’t Skip the Visitax for Quintana Roo
If your Mexico trip includes Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, or Cozumel—all located in the state of Quintana Roo—you’ll need to pay a tourism tax known as the Visitax. This tax supports local tourism infrastructure and natural reserves.
Pro tip: Pay your Visitax online before you travel. There are fake sites out there, so make sure you’re on the official government website. If you’re flying or crossing by land, you may be asked for proof of payment. Cruise passengers usually have it included in their port fees.
Cancun Airport Arrival Tips: What to Expect
Flying into Cancun International Airport (CUN)? Here’s how to make your arrival a breeze:
Immigration: You’ll either speak to an immigration officer or use a self-service kiosk if you're 18+. If you use the kiosk, you’ll get a printed receipt with a QR code—don’t lose it. You may need it when departing Mexico. Otherwise, if you see the immigration officer, you will get a stamp in your passport.
Baggage Claim & Customs: Grab your bags and follow directions if selected for inspection. Stay polite and cooperative.
Avoiding Timeshare Scams: As soon as you exit the secure area, you’ll be swarmed with people offering “free” transportation and timeshare presentations. Ignore them and keep walking until you reach the real transportation area outside.
If you’ve booked with me, your private transfer will be ready and waiting. If not... well, that’s one travel mistake you’ll only make once.
