Which Azores Island Should a Foodie Visit First?

Eating Your Way Through the Azores: Which Islands Deserve a Spot on Your Plate?
Let me save you some planning stress. The Azores are volcanic, lush, and delicious, but choosing from nine islands can be overwhelming. If food (and wine) is your love language, which mine is, here's where I'd send you first, and why.
São Miguel: Start Here
If you only get one island, make it this one. It's the best mix of "wow, that's a story" and "wow, I want seconds."
Cozido das Furnas: A pot of pork, beef, chicken, potatoes, yams, and cabbage gets lowered into the volcanic ground in Furnas Valley. Geothermal heat slow-cooks it for five to six hours. Tender, cozy, and you can taste the story.
Bolo lêvedo: A slightly sweet, fluffy flatbread from Furnas. Toast it with butter and thank me later.
Queijadas da Vila: Delicate custard pastries from Vila Franca do Campo. Perfect with coffee.
Ananás dos Açores: Intensely flavorful pineapple grown in São Miguel's greenhouses. It does not taste like the grocery store version.
Tea: Gorreana and Porto Formoso are Europe's only commercial tea plantations. A scenic sip-and-stroll stop, no hiking boots required. (Porto Formoso is closed Sundays, so plan that stroll for another day.)
Terceira: For the Comfort Food Lovers
This is your island if a slow-cooked, rich, savory meal is your idea of a perfect evening.
Alcatra da Terceira: Beef stew marinated with red wine, garlic, bacon, allspice, and cloves, traditionally cooked in an unglazed clay pot.
Massa sovada: Sweet corn bread, made for soaking up every last bit of that gravy.
Bife à regional: Local beef with butter, garlic, and pimentão da terra, often topped with a fried egg.
Bolo de Dona Amélia: A spiced cake with cornmeal, molasses, cinnamon, and raisins. Dessert, sorted.
São Jorge: For the Cheese Girls
You know who you are. Queijo de São Jorge is a hard-to-semi-hard cheese made from raw cow's milk and aged at least three months—slightly spicy, and the bite deepens the longer it ages. Pack a wedge, find a view, and call it lunch.
Pico: For the Wine Girls
Okay, ladies, this one's for the glass-in-hand crowd. Pico is the Azores' wine island, with UNESCO-protected vineyards tucked inside little black lava-stone walls. Sip a crisp, mineral Verdelho, then pair it with octopus stewed in wine, local cheese, or fresh Atlantic tuna. Want a special-occasion dinner? Book a table at Latitude, the Azores Wine Company restaurant, right at the winery — it's now a proper tasting-menu spot (four courses, wine pairings, dinner only), so think "celebration dinner," not "drop-in wine bar." There's also a casual tasting room for daytime sips if that's more your speed. Honestly, I'm fine with both.
And if you're a wine lover like me, stay tuned. I'm working on more about the wines of the Azores, and you're going to want a glass in hand for it.
Bonus Stop: Faial
Pico's neighbor is a quick ferry ride away, so it's an easy add-on. In Horta, grab a drink at Peter Café Sport (it's legendary — and a full café, so you can stay for dinner), try fofas do Faial (a light fennel-seed pastry with a lemon or vanilla cream filling — traditionally a Carnival treat, so if you spot them, don't hesitate), and cook your own dinner on a hot lava stone at Canto da Doca. It's interactive, and it's a great conversation starter with your travel crew. You can also find lapas and fresh lobster here.
Wherever You Land: The Seafood
Seafood shows up all over the islands, so order it everywhere. Try lapas (grilled limpets with butter, garlic, lemon, and a little chili), cracas (briny barnacles boiled in seawater), polvo guisado (octopus stew), and caldeirada de peixe (a hearty fish stew). Add a glass of Kima, the passion-fruit soft drink made in the Azores, for something nonalcoholic and refreshing.
So, Where Should You Go?
Want the full sampler? São Miguel.
Craving cozy, hearty meals? Terceira.
Is cheese the main event? São Jorge.
Is wine the main event? Pico, with a side trip to Faial.
Can't choose? Combine two. Island hopping is very doable.
